Punx.social has been translated into English!
Summer break is over and now, as promised, the complete punx.social website is also available in English:
https://punx.social/en (or you click the English button on top.
It's your punkrock starting point, if you want to try something else then the normal Meta (anti-)social media.
Have a read, to learn more about #Mastodon, #Pixelfed and #Peertube.
Please share this information on Facebook, Instagram or wherever you reach all other punks normally.
Also the text is prepared to be translated by the community (you!) into any other language.
If you wanna help, ping us.
Or have a look at:
https://codeberg.org/fedipunx/punxsocial#how-to-start-a-new-translation
If that's too complicated, please let us know, and we will try something else.
P.s. Dear translation bubble: this is a non-commercial website from the community to the community, that's why we ask the community. No one is earning money here with this project, that's why we can't hire a professional translator. Just before everyone of you starts complaining again.

@mttaggart Indeed. I guess watch for the media copters.

This is the big LG television surveillance documentary story GN have been working on for a couple of months, and that they previewed a few days ago.
The complete pervasiveness of spying upon not just you and what you watch but _every person and every device around every set_ is genuinely staggering. And it gets worse if you use their apps, particularly the LG TV "network":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IFVTcM28KA
Having an old set DOES NOT HELP YOU; they've been adding these spying functions in firmware updates.
So DO NOT BUY ANYTHING LG. Certainly not anything "smart."

If I were going to re-shoot this today, I'd use the Rodenstock 32mm to make two vertically shifted captures and stitch them. This can yield roughly the angle of view of a 16mm lens in 35mm format terms, with excellent edge sharpness and very low geometric distortion.
But this place is no longer safely accessible. It was reached via a side door in the now-shuttered Hyatt, and then carefully crossing the roadway; today you'd have to walk two blocks in traffic behind a blind curve to get there.
I got the P1 system less than a year later, and the first thing I wanted to do was re-shoot this. But by then it was too late; no longer accessible.
So, this is yet another example where the camera and lens one has being the best tool for the job, by definition.
@pallenberg Irony is dead. Modern times ran it over and reversed and ran it over again and buried it and dug it up and hit it with a baseball bat and threw it in the ocean.
@mttaggart Oooh, annoying, Santa Monica has neither open radio feeds or Pulsepoint I see

Captured with a DSLR and a 19mm shift lens (vertically shifted about 5mm).
Had to dodge some traffic to set up here, but found a protected traffic barrier to be behind with the tripod.
These are two of my favorite buildings in NYC.
This shifted the 19mm Nikkor lens to its limits. Unfortunately this was before I got the Phase One system, which would have allowed a more formally structured and geometrically accurate composition.

@benpate sorry, I didn't mean it was an issue where people need to be better people.
I meant, users need to be in better control of the instances they're on. Having a real-world connection to the owner is one way; *being* an owner, even as part of a large group, is better.
Those aren't problems you solve with code, mostly.
@evan Thanks, I understand better now. Yes, I follow you, that some sense of ownership would fundamentally change how people view the network and how they interact on it.
It seems like any kind of "having skin in the game" would be a positive step forward. Because it takes time and work for someone to build up that ownership (in whatever form it takes) and they wouldn't want to lose it. So, they might make different choices to maintain their reputation as a member of XYZ community.
If you want to restrict or screen who can follow your account on Mastodon, you can switch your account to "follow requests" mode. When this is activated you will be able to accept or reject followers before their follows become active, so you can accept the ones you want and reject the ones you don't want. More info at:
This guide also answers lots of questions about follow requests. Let me know if your question is missing from the guide.

@jpoesen The vast majority of my smart devices live on a very restricted VLAN, with access only to Home Assistant.
This is the latest reminder in a long list of why it was a good idea to set that up.

Say hello to the Fediverse Drupal recipe! Understanding and configuring the ActivityPub module can be a tedious task. This recipe ships with sensible default configuration enabling you to set everything up in just one minute! See https://drupal.org/project/fediverse for more information. Quick demo in the video, it's pure magic!
